Cape Cod Charm Meets the Inland Northwest

A Hardie Shingle Siding Installation in Valleyford, WA

Fiber Cement Siding With Southern Style

Just south of Spokane, off Valley Chapel Road in Valleyford, WA, sits a home with timeless character and thoughtful craftsmanship. It’s a large, elegant house with sweeping porches, custom trim, and architectural details you’d expect to see somewhere in the Carolinas. But this isn’t a southern estate. This is a Pacific Northwest original—built with durable materials that match our weather and way of life.

A Cape Cod Look Without the Cedar Upkeep

When the homeowners reached out to us at Danko Exterior Solutions, they had a clear idea in mind: southern-inspired design. They were drawn to the warmth and texture of cedar shingle siding, but they didn’t want the maintenance that comes with real wood.

Instead, they opted for James Hardie Shingle siding in a staggered-edge style, a smart and long-lasting alternative. With its fiber cement composition, this siding holds up to harsh winters, dry summers, and everything in between. It mimics the deep grain and shadow lines of cedar, but it resists moisture, pests, and peeling. That made it a perfect fit for this Valleyford home.

The color paired beautifully with the crisp white trim and darker roofline, striking a balance between tradition and low maintenance.

Built for Style Crafted for Detail

Looking at the house, the first thing you notice is the wraparound porch. Columns rise from a stone foundation, each one meticulously aligned. Installing these columns was no small task. The goal was simple—make them look clean, sturdy, and elegant. But behind that clean look is a careful system of hidden fasteners and structural reinforcement. Everything had to line up. Nothing could show.

Above the porch, beadboard soffits run in diagonal lines, painted a soft haint blue. This detail wasn’t just about style—it was about heritage. In southern folklore, haint blue was said to keep spirits and insects away. The homeowners chose it for that reason, and because it created a calming contrast to the rest of the exterior.

These kinds of details don’t just happen. Every piece of trim, every groove, had to be measured and installed by hand. No prebuilt soffits, no shortcuts.

Elevation Changes That Require Real Skill

One of the most challenging aspects of this project was the scale. This is a large home with changing elevations on all sides. Keeping the siding level across these shifts requires more than just a tape measure and a good eye.

We used laser leveling equipment throughout the build, double- and triple-checking each line before a single panel went up. It’s the only way to guarantee clean sightlines around a house this size. Our crew brought years of experience to the job—and it shows in the finished result.

Everything feels even. Balanced. As if it’s always been there.

Blending Material with the Environment

The exterior doesn’t compete with the landscape. It fits. We worked around existing stonework, matched profiles, and ensured all window casings sat flush within the siding. Each light fixture, each transition between trim and shingle, was treated as its own small project.

On the rear side of the home, French doors open onto the porch with more staggered-edge Hardie shingles surrounding them. The pattern carries consistently from front to back. Nothing feels like an afterthought.

Even the rooflines play into the overall look. Each dormer, gable, and chimney helps tell the architectural story, and our job was to make sure the siding reinforced that—not distracted from it.

A Note from the Crew

This was one of those projects that stays with you. Not just because of the technical work, but because of the homeowner’s commitment to doing things right. They wanted a home that looked timeless and lived easy. We’re proud to say we helped them get there.
